Today I had the pleasure of taking Pete Egan and three of his grandsons out for one of our final striped bass combo trips of the spring season — and what a trip it was!

We kicked things off in Peconic Bay with some steady action on the weakfish, landing plenty of shorts and a solid keeper before the tide turned and signaled it was time to chase bass. We made our way to Plum Gut, where the boys put in the work and were rewarded with a nice legal slot striper.

As the bite slowed, we pushed farther east to The Race — and were met with an unforgettable sight: a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine cruising through on its way to the Atlantic. The sheer size and power of it left all of us in awe, especially the grandkids.

Though we didn’t hook any more fish, we spotted seals, soaked in the views, and made the ride back with full hearts, great stories, fresh fillets, and the kind of memories only a day on the water with grandpa can bring.
